前qián事shì之zhī不bù忘wàng,后hòu事shì之zhī师shī。

Not forgetting what came before is the teacher of what comes after.

释shì读dú:不bù忘记wàng jì过去guò qù的de事shì,就是jìu shì以后yǐ hòu的de老师lǎo shī。这zhè句jù两liǎng千qiān年前nián qián的话de huà,今天jīn tiān还huán在zài用yòng。

Gloss: not forgetting the past teaches the future, a line from two thousand years ago still in daily use.

士shì为wéi知己zhī jǐ者zhě死sǐ,女nǚ为wéi悦yuè己jǐ者zhě容róng。

A man of spirit dies for the one who truly knows him; a woman adorns herself for the one who delights in her.

释shì读dú:豫yù让ràng说shuō的de名言míng yán。懂dǒng你nǐ的de人rén,值得zhí de你nǐ拼命pīn mìng;欣赏xīn shǎng你nǐ的de人rén,值得zhí de你nǐ打扮dǎ ban。

Gloss: the assassin Yu Rang's creed, die for the one who understands you, dress for the one who admires you.

父母fù mǔ之zhī爱ài子zi,则zé为wéi之zhī计jì深远shēn yuǎn。

Parents who love their child plan far ahead for it.

释shì读dú:触chù龙lóng劝quàn赵zhào太tài后hòu的话de huà。真正zhēn zhèng的de爱ài,不bù是shì眼前yǎn qián抱bào紧jǐn,而是ér shì替tì孩子hái zi想xiǎng得děi很hěn远yuǎn。

Gloss: Chulong's counsel to the Queen Mother, true love is not holding tight now but planning far ahead.

风fēng萧xiāo萧xiāo兮xī易yì水shuǐ寒hán,壮zhuàng士shì一yī去qù兮xī不bù复fù还huán。

The wind wails and the Yi River runs cold; the brave man leaves and never returns.

释shì读dú:荆jīng轲kē出发chū fā刺cì秦qín王wáng前qián唱chàng的de歌gē。一yī去qù不bù回huí的de人rén,把bǎ生死shēng sǐ唱chàng成chéng了liǎo千qiān古gǔ名míng句jù。

Gloss: Jing Ke's song before leaving to strike the King of Qin, a man who will not return, singing life and death into eternity.

南nán辕yuán而ér北běi辙zhé:臣chén之zhī君jūn欲yù之zhī楚chǔ,将jiāng奚xī为wéi北běi面miàn行háng?

Pointing the carriage south while heading north: my lord wishes for Chu, why drive toward the north?

释shì读dú:南nán辕yuán北běi辙zhé。马mǎ再zài好hào、钱qián再zài多duō、车chē夫fū再zài强qiáng,方向fāng xiàng错cuò了liǎo,离lí目标mù biāo只zhī会huì越来越yuè lái yuè远yuǎn。

Gloss: south-bound shafts, north-bound wheels. Fine horses, fat purse, skilled driver, the wrong direction only widens the gap.

蚌bàng方fāng出chū曝pù,而ér鹬yù啄zhuó其qí肉ròu,蚌bàng合hé而ér箝qián其qí喙huì。鹬yù曰yuē:今日jīn rì不bù雨yǔ,明日míng rì不bù雨yǔ,即jí有yǒu死sǐ蚌bàng。蚌bàng亦yì谓wèi鹬yù曰yuē:今日jīn rì不bù出chū,明日míng rì不bù出chū,即jí有yǒu死sǐ鹬yù。

A clam lay sunning when a snipe pecked its flesh; the clam clamped shut on the bird's beak. The snipe said: no rain today, no rain tomorrow, and you'll be a dead clam. The clam answered: no release today, no release tomorrow, and you'll be a dead snipe.

两liǎng者zhě不肯bù kěn相xiāng舍shě,渔yú者zhě得děi而ér并bìng禽qín之zhī。

Neither would let go, and the fisherman came and caught them both.

释shì读dú:鹬yù蚌bàng相xiāng争zhēng,渔yú翁wēng得děi利lì。两边liǎng biān死sǐ磕kē,便宜pián yi的de是shì看热闹kàn rè nao的de第dì三sān者zhě。

Gloss: snipe and clam locked, the fisherman profits. When two sides fight to the death, the bystander collects.

狡jiǎo兔tù有yǒu三sān窟kū,仅jǐn得děi免miǎn其qí死sǐ耳ěr。

The cunning rabbit has three burrows, only thus does it escape death.

释shì读dú:冯féng谖xuān替tì孟mèng尝cháng君jūn留líu的de后hòu路lù。聪明cōng ming人rén给gěi自己zì jǐ多duō留líu一yī条tiáo退tuì路lù,危机wēi jī来lái了liǎo才cái不bù慌huāng。

Gloss: Feng Xuan's back-up plans for Lord Mengchang. The wise keep a second door open for the crisis.

今jīn臣chén闻wén王wáng诈zhà赵zhào王wáng于yú渑miǎn池chí之zhī会huì,令lìng赵zhào王wáng鼓gǔ瑟sè而ér秦qín王wáng击jī缶fǒu。臣chén请qǐng以yǐ颈jǐng血xuè溅jiàn大dà王wáng矣yǐ。

I hear that at the Mianchi meeting you made the King of Zhao play the zither while you struck the jar, allow me now to splash my neck's blood on Your Majesty.

释shì读dú:蔺lìn相xiāng如rú在zài渑miǎn池chí会huì上shàng硬yìng顶dǐng秦qín王wáng:你nǐ敢gǎn羞xiū辱rǔ我wǒ王wáng,我wǒ就jìu血xuè溅jiàn当场dāng chǎng。弱ruò国guó的de外交官wài jiāo guān,也yě能néng把bǎ强qiáng秦qín顶dǐng回去huí qu。

Gloss: Lin Xiangru at Mianchi faced the King of Qin: humiliate my king and I splash my blood on you. A weak state's envoy could still push mighty Qin back.

门mén庭tíng若ruò市shì:群qún臣chén进jìn谏jiàn,门mén庭tíng若ruò市shì;数shǔ月yuè之后zhī hòu,时时shí shí而ér间jiān进jìn;期qī年nián之后zhī hòu,虽suī欲yù言yán,无wú可kě进jìn者zhě。

At the gate like a market: the ministers' remonstrations crowded like a market; after some months they came only now and then; after a full year, those wishing to speak found nothing left to say.

释shì读dú:邹zōu忌jì讽fěng齐qí王wáng纳nà谏jiàn的de结果jiē guǒ。批评pī píng越来越yuè lái yuè少shǎo,不bù是shì没méi人rén敢gǎn说shuō,是shì毛病máo bìng真的zhēn de改gǎi完了wán le。

Gloss: Zou Ji's advice to the King of Qi. Complaints fading means not silence but faults truly fixed.

千qiān金jīn市shì骨gǔ:王wáng诚chéng欲yù致zhì士shì,先xiān从cóng隗kuí始shǐ;隗kuí且qiě见jiàn事shì,况kuàng贤xián于yú隗kuí者zhě乎hū?

Buying the bones for a thousand gold: if the king truly wants talent, begin with me, when even I am honored, what will worthier men think?

释shì读dú:郭guō隗kuí劝quàn燕yàn昭zhāo王wáng。连lián我wǒ这样zhè yàng的de人rén都dōu被bèi重用zhòng yòng,天下tiān xià的de人才rén cái自然zì rán会huì来lái。千qiān金jīn买mǎi马mǎ骨gǔ,买mǎi的de是shì名声míng shēng。

Gloss: Guo Wei's counsel to King Zhao, honor even me and worthier men will come. A thousand gold for bones buys reputation.

靖jìng郭guō君jūn将jiāng城chéng薛xuē,客kè多duō以yǐ谏jiàn。靖jìng郭guō君jūn谓wèi谒yè者zhě:无wú为wéi客kè通tōng。

Lord Jingguo planned to wall the city of Xue, and many retainers came to dissuade him. He told his usher: admit no one.

齐qí人rén有yǒu请qǐng者zhě曰yuē:臣chén请qǐng三sān言yán而已ér yǐ矣yǐ,益yì一yī言yán,臣chén请qǐng烹pēng。靖jìng郭guō君jūn因yīn见jiàn之zhī。

A man of Qi begged: grant me three words only, one extra and you may boil me. Lord Jingguo received him.

客kè趋qū而ér进jìn曰yuē:海hǎi大dà鱼yú。因yīn反fǎn走zǒu。君jūn曰yuē:客kè有yǒu于yú此cǐ。客kè曰yuē:鄙bǐ臣chén不bù敢gǎn以yǐ死sǐ为wéi戏xì。

The man stepped forward and said: big fish of the sea, then turned to go. The lord called: stay! The guest said: I dare not jest with death.

君jūn曰yuē:亡wáng,更gèng言yán之zhī。对duì曰yuē:君jūn不bù闻wén大dà鱼yú乎hū?网wǎng不bù能néng止zhǐ,钩gōu不bù能néng牵qiān,荡dàng而ér失shī水shuǐ,则zé蝼lóu蚁yǐ得意dé yì焉yān。今jīn夫fū齐qí,亦yì君jūn之zhī水shuǐ也yě。

The lord said: no harm, go on. He answered: have you not heard of the great fish? Nets cannot stop it, hooks cannot pull it, but if it slips and loses the water, even ants have their way. Qi, my lord, is your water.

释shì读dú:海hǎi大dà鱼yú的de故事gù shi。三sān个gè字zì进jìn门mén,把bǎ靖jìng郭guō君jūn说服shuō fú了liǎo:你nǐ是shì大dà鱼yú,齐qí国guó是shì水shuǐ,离开lí kāi水shuǐ修xīu城墙chéng qiáng有yǒu什么shén me用yòng?说shuō客kè的de本事běn shi,是shì把bǎ大道dà dào理lǐ藏cáng在zài小xiǎo故事gù shi里lǐ。

Gloss: the great fish of the sea, three words through the door convinced Lord Jingguo: you are the fish, Qi your water; what use are walls out of water? The persuader's art is hiding the argument in a story.

魏wèi武wǔ侯hóu与yǔ诸zhū大夫dài fu浮fú于yú西xī河hé,称chēng曰yuē:河hé山shān之zhī险xiǎn,岂qǐ不bù亦yì信xìn固gù哉zāi!

Marquis Wu of Wei, boating with his ministers on the West River, exclaimed: such steep rivers and mountains, what a solid defense!

吴wú起qǐ对duì曰yuē:在zài德dé不bù在zài险xiǎn。昔xī三sān苗miáo氏shì左zuǒ洞dòng庭tíng,右yòu彭péng蠡lí,德dé义yì不bù修xīu,禹yǔ灭miè之zhī。

Wu Qi answered: security lies in virtue, not terrain. The Sanmiao had Dongting on their left and Pengli on their right, but neglected virtue, and Yu destroyed them.

释shì读dú:吴wú起qǐ谏jiàn魏wèi武wǔ侯hóu:江jiāng山shān险xiǎn要不yào bù顶dǐng用yòng,德dé行háng不够bù gòu照样zhào yàng亡国wáng guó。山shān再zài险xiǎn,不如bù rú人心rén xīn齐qí。

Gloss: Wu Qi to the Marquis, terrain does not defend, virtue does. Steeper mountains mean less than united hearts.

苏sū秦qín之zhī楚chǔ,三sān日rì乃nǎi得děi见jiàn乎hū王wáng。谈tán卒zú,辞cí而ér行háng。楚chǔ王wáng曰yuē:寡guǎ人rén闻wén先生xiān sheng,若ruò闻wén古人gǔ rén,今jīn先生xiān sheng乃nǎi不bù远yuǎn千qiān里lǐ而ér临lín寡guǎ人rén,曾céng不肯bù kěn留líu,愿yuàn闻wén其qí说shuō。

Su Qin went to Chu and waited three days for an audience. When he rose to leave after one talk, the king said: hearing you is like hearing the ancients, you came a thousand li yet will not stay. Tell me why.

对duì曰yuē:楚chǔ国guó之zhī食shí贵guì于yú玉yù,薪xīn贵guì于yú桂guì,谒yè者zhě难得nán dé见jiàn如rú鬼guǐ,王wáng难得nán dé见jiàn如rú天tiān帝dì。今jīn令lìng臣chén食shí玉yù炊chuī桂guì,因yīn鬼guǐ见jiàn帝dì。

He answered: in Chu food costs more than jade, firewood more than cassia; your usher is rarer than a ghost, and you harder to see than the Lord of Heaven. Now you ask me to eat jade, burn cassia, and pass a ghost to see Heaven.

释shì读dú:苏sū秦qín发fā牢骚láo sāo发fā成chéng了liǎo名míng句jù。饭fàn比bǐ玉yù贵guì,柴chái比bǐ桂guì贵guì,看kān门mén的de像xiàng鬼guǐ,大dà王wáng像xiàng天tiān,,把bǎ楚chǔ王wáng怼duì得děi哑yǎ口kǒu无wú言yán。

Gloss: Su Qin's complaint became immortal, food above jade, fuel above cassia, the usher a ghost, the king a god. The King of Chu had no reply.

《战zhàn国guó策cè》里lǐ这些zhè xiē人rén,靠kào一yī张zhāng嘴zuǐ吃饭chī fàn,也yě靠kào一yī张zhāng嘴zuǐ改变gǎi biàn历史lì shǐ。

The men of the Zhanguo Ce lived by their tongues, and changed history by them too.

庄zhuāng辛xīn谓wèi楚chǔ襄xiāng王wáng曰yuē:君jūn王wáng左zuǒ州zhōu侯hóu,右yòu夏xià侯hóu,辇niǎn从cóng鄢yān陵líng君jūn与yǔ寿shòu陵líng君jūn,专zhuān淫yín逸yì侈chǐ靡mí,不顾bù gù国guó政zhèng,郢yǐng都dōu必bì危wēi矣yǐ。

Zhuang Xin said to King Xiang of Chu: your lordship keeps Lord Zhouhou at your left, Lord Xiahou at your right, and rides with Lords Yanling and Shouling, sunk in pleasure and heedless of the state. The capital Ying is in danger.

襄xiāng王wáng曰yuē:先生xiān sheng老lǎo悖bèi乎hū?将jiāng以为yǐ wéi楚chǔ国guó妖yāo祥xiáng乎hū?庄zhuāng辛xīn曰yuē:臣chén诚chéng见jiàn其qí必然bì rán者zhě也yě,非fēi敢gǎn以为yǐ wéi国guó妖yāo祥xiáng也yě。

The king said: sir, are you senile, or do you call yourself an omen for Chu? Zhuang Xin answered: I only see what must come; I dare not be a portent.

庄zhuāng辛xīn去qù之zhī赵zhào,留líu五wǔ月yuè,秦qín果guǒ举jǔ鄢yān、郢yǐng、巫wū、上shàng蔡cài、陈chén之zhī地dì。襄xiāng王wáng流líu掩yǎn于yú城chéng阳yáng,于是yú shì使shǐ人rén发fā驺zōu征zhēng庄zhuāng辛xīn于yú赵zhào。

Zhuang Xin left for Zhao. Five months later Qin indeed took Yan, Ying, Wu, Shangcai and Chen. The king fled to Chengyang and sent riders to bring Zhuang Xin back from Zhao.

庄zhuāng辛xīn至zhì,襄xiāng王wáng曰yuē:寡guǎ人rén不bù能néng用yòng先生xiān sheng之zhī言yán,今jīn事shì至此zhì cǐ,为wéi之zhī奈nài何hé?

When Zhuang Xin arrived, the king said: I did not use your words, sir, and now it has come to this, what is to be done?

庄zhuāng辛xīn对duì曰yuē:臣chén闻wén鄙bǐ语yǔ曰yuē,见jiàn兔tù而ér顾gù犬quǎn,未wèi为wéi晚wǎn也yě;亡wáng羊yáng而ér补bǔ牢láo,未wèi为wéi迟chí也yě。

Zhuang Xin answered: I have heard the saying, seeing the rabbit and turning to the hound is not too late; losing the sheep and mending the pen is not too late.

释shì读dú:亡羊补牢wáng yáng bǔ láo的de原yuán话huà,就是jìu shì这zhè场chǎng对话duì huà里lǐ说shuō的de。楚chǔ襄xiāng王wáng不bù听tīng劝quàn,丢dīu了liǎo半bàn个gè楚chǔ国guó才cái回头huí tóu找zhǎo庄zhuāng辛xīn。庄zhuāng辛xīn告诉gào su他tā:羊yáng丢dīu了liǎo才cái修xīu圈juàn,只要zhǐ yào肯kěn修xīu,就jìu不算bù suàn晚wǎn。

Gloss: 'mending the pen after losing the sheep' comes from this very exchange. The king ignored the warning and lost half of Chu before calling Zhuang Xin back. Lose the sheep, then mend, better late than never.

曾céng子zi之zhī妻qī之zhī市shì,其qí子zi随suí之zhī而ér泣qì。其qí母mǔ曰yuē:女nǚ还huán,顾gù反fǎn为wéi女nǚ杀shā彘zhì。妻qī适shì市shì来lái,曾céng子zi欲yù捕bǔ彘zhì杀shā之zhī。妻qī止zhǐ之zhī曰yuē:特tè与yǔ婴儿yīng ér戏xì耳ěr。

Zengzi's wife was going to market when their son cried to follow. She said: go back, and when I return I'll kill the pig for you. When she came home, Zengzi went to catch the pig. She stopped him: I was only joking with the child.

曾céng子zi曰yuē:婴儿yīng ér非fēi与yǔ戏xì也yě。婴儿yīng ér非fēi有yǒu知zhī也yě,待dài父母fù mǔ而ér学者xué zhě也yě,听tīng父母fù mǔ之zhī教jiāo。今jīn子zi欺qī之zhī,是shì教jiāo子zi欺qī也yě。遂suì烹pēng彘zhì也yě。

Zengzi said: a child is not to be joked with. Children know nothing and learn from their parents' teaching. Deceive him now, and you teach him deceit. So he cooked the pig.

释shì读dú:曾céng子zi杀shā彘zhì。妻子qī zi哄hòng孩子hái zi一yī句jù杀shā猪zhū吃chī肉ròu,曾céng子zi真zhēn把bǎ猪zhū杀shā了liǎo:对duì孩子hái zi说话shuō huà要yào算suàn数shǔ,骗piàn他tā一yī次cì,他tā就jìu学会xué huì骗人piàn rén。

Gloss: Zengzi slaughters the pig. His wife's idle promise became a real lesson, lie to a child once and you teach him to lie.

《战zhàn国guó策cè》教jiāo的de就是jìu shì这zhè种zhòng本事běn shi:几jǐ句jù话huà,把bǎ道理dào li装zhuāng进jìn故事gù shi里lǐ,让ràng人rén自己zì jǐ明白míng bai过来guò lái。

The Zhanguo Ce teaches precisely this: pack the truth into a story and let the listener understand it himself.

《战zhàn国guó策cè》是shì策cè士shì们men的de语言yǔ yán艺术yì shù:讲jiǎng一yī个gè寓言yù yán,说shuō动dòng一yī个gè国君guó jūn,改变gǎi biàn一yī场chǎng战争zhàn zhēng。
