Seven in the evening, light rain over the city, car lights forming a river. Li rides his scooter between towers while his phone keeps buzzing: new orders.
Li is twenty-four and has delivered food for two years. He leaves at ten each morning, returns at ten at night, forty orders a day.
The work is hard. In peak summer his clothes dry only to soak again; in deepest winter his hands can barely hold the handlebars.
Once in heavy rain he delivered to an old compound. No elevator: he climbed seven floors and handed over the meal, still warm.
An old lady opened the door. Seeing him soaked, she said thank you for the trouble and handed him a dry towel. In that moment, he says, his heart warmed.
Of course there are hard moments. Once, stuck in traffic, a meal arrived ten minutes late; the customer left a bad review and said ugly things.
Li did not argue. The customer could not see the red lights he had run, the rain he had ridden through.
Hard as it is, Li has a plan. Each month he splits his pay in three: one part to his parents back home, one for rent and living, one saved.
My dream is to go home in three years and open a small restaurant, he says. Then I won't spend every day on the road.
Speaking of the future, his eyes brighten. The rain continues; he wipes his face and rides on.
What Li fears most is not tiredness but overtime. The system times every order and late means a fine; to avoid it he pushes the scooter to full speed through the crowds.
Asked why he doesn't find easier work, Li smiles: easy work pays little. I am young; a bit of hardship is fine. Save enough, and the road widens.
Rain brings the most orders and the most accidents. Once he slid at a crossing and the meal spilled everywhere; he got up, checked his leg, then called the customer to apologize.
In this city there are hundreds of thousands of riders like him. They make life more convenient, and make the city run faster.
