山不在高,有仙则名。水不在深,有龙则灵。斯是陋室,惟吾德馨。
A mountain is famous not for its height but for its immortals; water is numinous not for its depth but for its dragons. This is a humble room, fragrant only with my virtue.
苔痕上阶绿,草色入帘青。谈笑有鸿儒,往来无白丁。
Moss stains the steps green, grass colors the curtains blue. In talk and laughter are great scholars; no unlearned come and go.
释读:刘禹锡的《陋室铭》。房子虽然简陋,可是住在里面的人品德高尚。真正的高雅不在房子,在人。
Gloss: Liu Yuxi's Inscription for a Humble Room. The room is plain, but its dweller's virtue is lofty. True elegance is not in the house but in the person.
水陆草木之花,可爱者甚蕃。晋陶渊明独爱菊。自李唐来,世人甚爱牡丹。
Of the flowers of water and land, many are lovely. Tao Yuanming of Jin loved the chrysanthemum alone; since the Tang, the world has loved the peony.
予独爱莲之出淤泥而不染,濯清涟而不妖,中通外直,不蔓不枝,香远益清,亭亭净植。
I alone love the lotus, which rises from mud unstained, washed by clear ripples yet never seductive, hollow within and straight without, never sprawling, its fragrance purer from afar, standing clean and still.
释读:周敦颐的《爱莲说》。莲花从污泥里长出来却干干净净,是君子的象征:生在不好的环境里,也能保持干净。
Gloss: Zhou Dunyi's On Loving the Lotus. The lotus grows from mud yet stays clean, the symbol of the gentleman: born into a poor environment and still unsullied.
元丰六年十月十二日夜,解衣欲睡,月色入户,欣然起行。
On the night of the twelfth of the tenth month, the sixth year of Yuanfeng, I had undressed for sleep when moonlight entered my door, and gladly I rose and went out.
念无与为乐者,遂至承天寺寻张怀民。怀民亦未寝,相与步于中庭。
Thinking there was no one to share the joy with, I went to Chengtian Temple to find Zhang Huaimin. He too was awake, and we walked together in the courtyard.
庭下如积水空明,水中藻荇交横,盖竹柏影也。
The courtyard was like pooled water, clear and empty, with waterweed tangling across it, the shadows of bamboo and cypress.
何夜无月?何处无竹柏?但少闲人如吾两人者耳。
What night has no moon? What place has no bamboo and cypress? It is only rare to have idle people like the two of us.
释读:苏轼的《记承天寺夜游》。被贬黄州的晚上,一片月光、两个闲人,苦日子里也能看出诗意,这就是苏东坡。
Gloss: Su Shi's Night Walk at Chengtian Temple. A moonlit night in exile, two idle men, poetry found in hard days: that is Su Dongpo.
先天下之忧而忧,后天下之乐而乐。
To worry before the world worries, and rejoice after the world rejoices.
释读:范仲淹《岳阳楼记》里最有名的句子。一个真正的读书人,要把天下人的苦放在自己前面。
Gloss: the most famous line in Fan Zhongyan's Yueyang Tower Record. A true scholar puts the world's troubles before his own.
醉翁之意不在酒,在乎山水之间也。山水之乐,得之心而寓之酒也。
The drunken old man's heart is not in the wine but in the mountains and waters. The joy of landscape is held in the heart and lodged in the wine.
释读:欧阳修《醉翁亭记》。喝酒是借口,看山水才是真意。现在这句话用来形容:表面做的是一件事,心里想的是另一件事。
Gloss: Ouyang Xiu's Record of the Drunken Old Man's Pavilion. Wine was the excuse; the landscape was the meaning. Now the phrase describes doing one thing while meaning another.
先生不知何许人也,亦不详其姓字,宅边有五柳树,因以为号焉。闲静少言,不慕荣利。好读书,不求甚解;每有会意,便欣然忘食。
We do not know where the master came from nor his name; five willows grew by his house, so he took that as his name. Quiet and sparing of words, he sought neither glory nor gain. He loved reading without chasing exact meanings; whenever a passage struck him, he gladly forgot to eat.
释读:陶渊明的《五柳先生传》。不求甚解的意思不是不认真,而是读书读到心里去,不为难自己。
Gloss: Tao Yuanming's Master Five Willows. 'Not seeking exact understanding' is not carelessness; it is reading into the heart, not making yourself miserable.
世有伯乐,然后有千里马。千里马常有,而伯乐不常有。故虽有名马,祗辱于奴隶人之手,骈死于槽枥之间,不以千里称也。
Only when the world has a Bole do thousand-li horses appear. Such horses are common; Boles are not. So even famous horses suffer in the hands of grooms and die side by side at the trough, never called thousand-li.
释读:韩愈的《马说》。千里马很多,能认出千里马的人很少。好人才要遇上好眼睛。
Gloss: Han Yu's On Horses. Thousand-li horses are many; those who can spot them are few. Great talent needs the right eyes to find it.
陈康肃公善射,当世无双,公亦以此自矜。尝射于家圃,有卖油翁释担而立,睨之久而不去。
Chen Kangsu was the finest archer of his day and proud of it. Once, shooting in his yard, an old oil-seller set down his load and watched long with narrowed eyes.
见其发矢十中八九,但微颔之。康肃问曰:汝亦知射乎?吾射不亦精乎?翁曰:无他,但手熟尔。
Seeing nine of ten arrows hit, the old man only nodded faintly. Chen asked: do you know archery? Is my skill not fine? The old man said: nothing special, just practiced hands.
乃取一葫芦置于地,以钱覆其口,徐以杓酌油沥之,自钱孔入,而钱不湿。因曰:我亦无他,惟手熟尔。
He set a gourd on the ground, put a coin over its mouth, and slowly poured oil through the coin's hole without wetting it. Then he said: I have nothing special either, just practiced hands.
释读:欧阳修的《卖油翁》。神箭手有什么了不起?倒油的老头说:没有别的,手熟而已。功夫练到家,都是一回事。
Gloss: Ouyang Xiu's The Oil Peddler. What is so great about a master archer? Just practiced hands, says the old man pouring oil. Every skill, mastered, is the same.
潭中鱼可百许头,皆若空游无所依,日光下澈,影布石上,佁然不动,俶尔远逝,往来翕忽,似与游者相乐。
A hundred-odd fish in the pool seemed to swim in empty air; sunlight reached the bottom, shadows lay on the stone, the fish stayed still then darted far, back and forth, as if playing with the visitors.
释读:柳宗元的《小石潭记》。被贬永州的柳宗元在山水里找安慰,写鱼写水,其实写的都是自己的心情。
Gloss: Liu Zongyuan's Little Stone Pool. Exiled to Yongzhou, he sought comfort in landscape; writing fish and water, he really wrote his own heart.
不以物喜,不以己悲;居庙堂之高则忧其民,处江湖之远则忧其君。
Not gladdened by things, not saddened by self; high at court, one worries for the people; far by the rivers and lakes, one worries for the sovereign.
释读:还是《岳阳楼记》。不因为好事高兴,也不因为自己倒霉难过,心里装着的是天下。
Gloss: still the Yueyang Tower Record. Unmoved by luck, unbowed by loss; the heart holds the world.

Gloss: Liu Yuxi's Inscription for a Humble Room. His house was small and plain, yet he said the room is made noble by the virtue of who lives in it.
黔无驴,有好事者船载以入。至则无可用,放之山下。虎见之,庞然大物也,以为神。
Qian had no donkeys, until a meddler shipped one in. Finding no use for it, he set it loose below the mountain. A tiger saw it, a huge creature, and took it for a god.
他日,驴一鸣,虎大骇,远遁,以为且噬己也,甚恐。然往来视之,觉无异能者。
One day the donkey brayed; the tiger fled in terror, sure it was about to be eaten. But watching it back and forth, the tiger sensed no special power.
虎因喜,计之曰:技止此耳!因跳踉大吼,断其喉,尽其肉,乃去。
The tiger was glad, reckoning: is that all it can do? Then it leaped roaring, tore out the donkey's throat, ate its fill, and left.
释读:柳宗元的《黔之驴》。贵州的老虎第一次见到驴,被这个大个子吓住了。后来发现驴只会叫、只会踢,就把驴吃了。黔驴技穷说的就是这个故事:看着吓人,其实没什么真本事。
Gloss: Liu Zongyuan's The Donkey of Qian. The tiger, first frightened by the huge stranger, discovered it could only bray and kick, and ate it. 'The Qian donkey's tricks are spent' means: looks scary, no real skill.
余忆童稚时,能张目对日,明察秋毫,见藐小之物必细察其纹理,故时有物外之趣。
I remember in childhood I could stare open-eyed at the sun and see the finest hairs; meeting any tiny thing I always studied its texture, so I often found joy beyond the things themselves.
释读:沈复的《童趣》,初中的课文。小时候蹲在地上看蚂蚁搬家,一看就是半天,这样的快乐,大人们早就忘了。
Gloss: Shen Fu's Childhood Joys, a middle-school text. The delight of crouching to watch ants for half a day; adults long forgot it.
这些小文章都不长,可每一篇都藏着一个大大的道理,一千年来被中国人读了又读,背了又背。
