蘇東坡:一個打不倒的人

公元一零三七年,苏轼出生在四川眉山的一个读书人家庭。他的父亲苏洵是大文学家,弟弟苏辙后来也成了一代名臣,人们把他们父子三人叫作三苏。
In 1037 Su Shi was born into a family of scholars in Meishan, Sichuan. His father Su Xun was a great writer and his brother Su Che became a famous minister; together they are called the three Sus.
二十一岁那年,苏轼去京城参加科举考试。主考官欧阳修读了他的文章,大为赞赏,说:三十年后,天下人只会记得苏轼,不会记得我。
At twenty-one Su Shi went to the capital for the imperial exam. The chief examiner Ouyang Xiu praised his essay hugely, saying: in thirty years the world will remember only Su Shi, not me.
苏轼不但文章写得好,诗词、书法、画画也都是一流的水平。按理说,这样的人才应该一路顺风,可是他的一生却大起大落,三次被贬官,一次比一次远。
Su Shi excelled not only at prose but at poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Such talent should have meant a smooth life, yet his was full of rises and falls: three exiles, each further than the last.
最严重的一次,是四十四岁那年的乌台诗案。有人从他的诗里挑出几句话,说他反对朝廷,把他抓进了监狱,差一点丢了性命。
The worst came at forty-four, the Crow Terrace poetry case. People picked lines from his poems, accused him of opposing the court, and jailed him; he nearly lost his life.
出狱以后,他被贬到黄州,一个又小又穷的地方。官小了,钱少了,他就在城东的一块坡地上开荒种田,给自己起了个号,叫东坡居士。
Released, he was exiled to Huangzhou, a small poor place. With little rank and less money he farmed a slope east of the city and named himself the Layman of the Eastern Slope, Dongpo.
在黄州的日子虽然苦,却是苏轼写得最好的时候。大江东去,浪淘尽,千古风流人物,这样的句子,就是在黄州的江边写出来的。
Hard as Huangzhou was, it was where he wrote his best. 'The great river flows east, washing away all the heroes of time' was written on its riverbank.
有一个春天的晚上,他和朋友坐船夜游赤壁,写下了《赤壁赋》。文章里说,江上的清风,山间的明月,是没有人能够禁止的,是大自然送给我们每个人的礼物。
One spring night he rode a boat with friends to the Red Cliff and wrote the Red Cliff Rhapsody: the river breeze and mountain moon belong to no one and are forbidden to no one; they are nature's gift to us all.
五十九岁那年,苏轼又被贬到了更远的惠州,在广东。别人都觉得那里苦,他却写诗说:日啖荔枝三百颗,不辞长作岭南人。每天吃三百颗荔枝,我愿意一辈子做岭南人。
At fifty-nine he was exiled further still, to Huizhou in Guangdong. Others thought it bitter; he wrote: give me three hundred lychees a day and I'll gladly stay a Lingnan man forever.
六十二岁的时候,朝廷把他贬到了海南岛。在宋朝,那几乎是世界的尽头,去那里的人很少有活着回来的。
At sixty-two the court sent him to Hainan island. In the Song dynasty that was nearly the end of the world; few who went came back alive.
可是苏轼到了海南,没有抱怨。他办学堂,教学生,还帮着当地人挖井。海南出了第一个举人,就是他的学生。
Yet on Hainan he did not complain. He ran a school, taught students, helped locals dig wells. Hainan's first successful provincial scholar was his student.
一一零一年,苏轼在回北方的路上去世了,六十六岁。他这一辈子,当过很大的官,也做过很苦的农夫;吃过皇宫里的宴席,也吃过自己种的野菜。
In 1101 Su Shi died on the road north, aged sixty-six. He had held high office and farmed hard soil; he had eaten palace banquets and wild greens he grew himself.
有人问他这一生过得怎么样,他自己写过一句诗:问汝平生功业,黄州惠州儋州。意思是,我一生的功业,就在那三个被贬的地方。
Asked about his life, he wrote a line: tell me my life's achievement? Huangzhou, Huizhou, Danzhou. My life's work, he meant, was done in the three places of his exile.
在黄州,他还发明了东坡肉。猪肉便宜,当地人不会烧,他研究出慢火炖肉的办法,还写了一首《猪肉颂》教给大家。
In Huangzhou he even invented Dongpo pork. Pork was cheap and locals couldn't cook it; he worked out slow braising and wrote the Ode to Pork to teach them.
朋友怕他苦,他回信说:长江绕郭知鱼美,好竹连山觉笋香。意思是这里鱼好吃,竹笋也香,日子没有你们想的那么惨。
Friends feared for him; he wrote back: the river bends round the walls, I know its fish are fine; fine bamboo fills the hills, I smell the bamboo shoots. Life is not as bad as you think.
他在黄州写过一首词,最后几句是:回首向来萧瑟处,归去,也无风雨也无晴。回头看走过的路,风雨也好,晴天也好,都过去了。
He wrote a lyric there ending: I look back at the bleak road I came, and go home, neither wind nor rain nor sunshine. Whatever weather the road held, it is all behind.
后人说,中国有两个苏东坡:一个是朝廷里的苏学士,一个是黄州田地里的东坡居士。大家更喜欢后面那一个。
Later people say China had two Su Dongpos: the court scholar and the farmer of the Eastern Slope. Everyone loves the second more.
九百多年过去了,人们还是喜欢读苏轼。因为他告诉我们:命运可以把你打到最低的地方,可是怎么过日子,永远是你自己说了算。
Nine hundred years on, people still love reading Su Shi, because he taught us: fate can strike you to the lowest place, but how you live your days is always your own decision.
