两千一百多年以前,汉武帝派一个叫张骞的人出使西域。他的任务,是去找一个叫大月氏的民族,联合起来对付匈奴。
Over twenty-one hundred years ago Emperor Wu of Han sent a man named Zhang Qian west. His mission was to find the Yuezhi people and ally with them against the Xiongnu.
张骞出发的时候带了一百多人。走到半路,他们被匈奴抓住,一关就是十年。匈奴给他娶了妻子,希望他留下来,可是他一直没有忘记自己的任务。
He set out with over a hundred men. Halfway there the Xiongnu captured them and held them ten years. They gave him a wife, hoping he would stay, but he never forgot his mission.
十年后,张骞逃了出来,继续往西走,终于找到了大月氏。虽然大月氏不愿意打仗,但是张骞这一路,把西域的山川、国家、物产全都记在了心里。
After ten years he escaped and pushed west, finally finding the Yuezhi. They would not fight, but along the way he had memorized the mountains, states, and goods of the Western Regions.
又过了几年,张骞才回到长安。去的时候一百多人,回来的只有两个人。汉武帝听他讲西边的事情,听得入了迷。
Years more passed before he reached Chang'an. Of the hundred who left, only two returned. Emperor Wu listened to his tales of the west, entranced.
从那以后,汉朝的商人开始往西走,西域的商人开始往东来。这条路后来有一个响亮的名字:丝绸之路。
From then on Han merchants walked west and western merchants east. The road later earned a famous name: the Silk Road.
路上最重要的商品是丝绸。罗马的贵族为了穿一件中国的丝绸,愿意花等重的黄金。除了丝绸,还有瓷器、茶叶、纸张往西去;葡萄、石榴、核桃、良马,从西边来。
Its most precious cargo was silk. Roman nobles paid its weight in gold for a Chinese silk robe. Besides silk went porcelain, tea, and paper westward; grapes, pomegranates, walnuts, and fine horses came east.
但丝绸之路上运输的不只是商品。佛教从印度沿着这条路走进了中国,中国的造纸术也沿着这条路传到了西边,最后改变了整个世界的文明。
But more than goods moved along it. Buddhism traveled it from India into China; Chinese papermaking traveled it west, eventually changing the world's civilization.
这条路很长,从长安一直到地中海,中间要翻过雪山,走过沙漠。敦煌、喀什、撒马尔罕、巴格达,一个个城市在路的两边兴起,成了东西方文明的十字路口。
The road ran from Chang'an to the Mediterranean, over snow mountains and deserts. Dunhuang, Kashgar, Samarkand, Baghdad, cities rose along it, crossroads of civilizations.
商人们牵着骆驼,一走就是几个月。沙漠里有风暴,有强盗,也有在绿洲里等着他们的集市。走在这条路上的人,把勇气写进了历史。
Merchants led camels for months at a stretch. In the desert were storms, bandits, and the markets waiting in the oases. Those who walked it wrote courage into history.
几百年后,海上航线兴起,丝绸之路慢慢冷清了。沙漠把很多古城埋在了沙子下面,只留下莫高窟的壁画,还记着当年的热闹。
Centuries later sea routes rose and the road went quiet. Sand buried many of its old cities; only the murals of Mogao remember the bustle.
两千多年后的今天,这条路又以新的方式活了过来。火车从中国的城市一直开到欧洲,人们叫它新丝绸之路。
Two thousand years later the road has come alive again in a new form: trains run from Chinese cities all the way to Europe, and people call it the new Silk Road.
丝绸在罗马贵到什么程度?据说罗马元老院曾经下令禁止男人穿丝绸,因为买丝绸花掉的黄金太多,国库都快掏空了。
How costly was silk in Rome? The Senate reportedly once forbade men to wear it, for the gold spent on silk was emptying the treasury.
玄奘取经走的也是这条路。唐朝贞观年间,他一个人从长安出发,走了十九年,带回六百多部佛经。后来他的故事被写成了《西游记》,可是真实的玄奘,比小说里更了不起。
Xuanzang's journey for scriptures took the same road. In the Zhenguan era he left Chang'an alone, walked nineteen years, and brought back over six hundred sutras. His story became Journey to the West, but the real Xuanzang was greater than the novel.
敦煌的鸣沙山下有一眼月牙泉,两千年了,泉水从来没有干过。商队的骆驼在这里喝水,今天的游客还在这里拍照。沙漠会流动,可是有些地方,时间好像停住了。
Beneath Dunhuang's Singing Sand Dunes lies Crescent Spring, unfailing for two thousand years. Caravan camels drank here; today's tourists photograph it. Deserts shift, yet in some places time seems stopped.
今天,一列列货运火车沿着差不多同样的路线,把中国的东西运到欧洲。人们给它们起了个名字,叫中欧班列。两千年前骆驼走的路,现在火车还在走。
Today freight trains follow much the same route, carrying Chinese goods to Europe. They are called the China-Europe Railway Express: the road the camels walked two thousand years ago is still being traveled.
张骞当年走过的路,今天还在。只不过,当年的骆驼,换成了火车和飞机。
The road Zhang Qian walked is still there. Only the camels have become trains and planes.
