《史记》是司马迁写的中国第一部纪传体通史,一共一百三十篇,里面的很多句子,到今天还是成语。
The Records of the Grand Historian, by Sima Qian, is China's first biographical general history, one hundred thirty chapters. Many of its lines are still idioms today.
项庄舞剑,意在沛公。鸿门宴上,项庄舞剑助兴,其实每一剑都对着刘邦。
Xiang Zhuang performs the sword dance; his aim is on the Duke of Pei. At the Hongmen Banquet his dance was entertainment, but every thrust pointed at Liu Bang.
释读:这句话说的是,表面做一件事,心里想着的是另一件事。两千多年前的那个饭局,成了中国历史上有名的暗藏杀机。
Gloss: doing one thing on the surface while meaning another. That dinner two thousand years ago became China's famous hidden murder.
桃李不言,下自成蹊。桃树李树不会说话,可是人们来摘果子,树下自然走出了一条路。
Peach and plum trees do not speak, yet a path forms beneath them. People come for the fruit and tread a trail on their own.
释读:司马迁用这句话赞美飞将军李广:真正有本事的人不用自我宣传,人们自己会来。
Gloss: Sima Qian used it to praise General Li Guang: truly capable people need no self-promotion; people come by themselves.
人固有一死,或重于泰山,或轻于鸿毛。
Everyone must die; some deaths weigh like Mount Tai, others are light as a goose feather.
释读:这是司马迁受宫刑以后写给朋友的信里的话。他选择了屈辱地活着,就是为了把《史记》写完,让自己的死有重量。
Gloss: from the letter he wrote a friend after his castration. He chose a life of humiliation to finish the Records, so that his death would have weight.
王侯将相宁有种乎!陈胜起义的时候喊出的这句话,意思是:当王侯将相的人,难道天生就是贵种吗?
Are kings, lords, generals, and ministers a breed apart? So shouted Chen Sheng when he rose in rebellion: are the great born to it?
释读:这是中国历史上第一次农民起义的口号。司马迁把它写进史书,就是承认了普通人也能改写历史。
Gloss: the slogan of China's first peasant uprising. By writing it into history, Sima Qian admitted that ordinary people can rewrite history.
燕雀安知鸿鹄之志哉!还是小雇工的陈胜说:小麻雀哪里懂大雁的志向?
How can swallows and sparrows know the ambition of the great swan? Chen Sheng said it while still a hired hand: small birds cannot fathom a great one's aim.
释读:别人笑他一个种田的还想什么大志,他这句话,就是后来起义的伏笔。
Gloss: others laughed at a farmhand dreaming of greatness; the line foreshadows his later rebellion.
运筹帷幄之中,决胜千里之外。刘邦说,这个本事我不如张良。
Planning within the tent of strategy, deciding victory a thousand li away. Liu Bang said: in this I am not Zhang Liang's equal.
释读:打天下的刘邦公开承认自己不如手下。会用人,比有本事更重要,这是刘邦成功的秘密。
Gloss: the man who won the empire openly admitted his inferiors were better. Employing people beats being able; that was his secret.
廉颇老矣,尚能饭否?老将廉颇年纪大了,别人问他还能不能吃饭,意思是他还能不能打仗。
Lian Po is old; can he still eat? When the aged general was asked about, the question of his appetite meant: can he still fight?
释读:一代名将到了晚年,人们只关心他还能吃几碗饭。英雄也会老,这句话里全是时间的味道。
Gloss: a great general in old age is measured by bowls of rice. Heroes grow old; the line tastes of time.
项羽乃悉引兵渡河,皆沉船,破釜甑,烧庐舍,持三日粮,以示士卒必死,无一还心。
Xiang Yu led his whole army across the river, sank the boats, smashed the cooking pots, burned the shelters, and carried three days of grain, to show his soldiers there was no way back.
释读:这就是破釜沉舟。项羽把锅砸了、船沉了,士兵们知道没有退路,只能拼命向前。巨鹿之战,楚军大胜。
Gloss: this is breaking the cauldrons and sinking the boats. With no retreat, the soldiers fought desperately and won at Julu.
越王勾践反国,乃苦身焦思,置胆于坐,坐卧即仰胆,饮食亦尝胆也,曰:女忘会稽之耻邪?
King Goujian of Yue, back in his state, lived hard and thought hard; he hung a gall bladder where he sat and lay, tasting it at every rest and meal, saying: have you forgotten the shame of Kuaiji?
释读:卧薪尝胆。勾践战败以后睡柴堆、尝苦胆,天天提醒自己记住耻辱。二十年以后,越国灭了吴国。
Gloss: sleeping on brushwood and tasting gall. After defeat Goujian reminded himself daily of the shame; twenty years later Yue destroyed Wu.
廉颇闻之,肉袒负荆,因宾客至蔺相如门谢罪,曰:鄙贱之人,不知将军宽之至此也!
When Lian Po heard, he bared his back, tied on thorn branches, and came with retainers to Lin Xiangru's door to apologize, saying: a coarse petty man like me did not know the general forgave me so far.
释读:负荆请罪。老将军廉颇背着荆条上门认错,两个人从此成了生死之交。这叫刎颈之交,也成了一段佳话。
Gloss: carrying thorns to ask punishment. Old General Lian Po apologized at the door, and the two became sworn friends for life.
赵括自少时学兵法,言兵事,以天下莫能当。尝与其父奢言兵事,奢不能难,然不谓善。
Zhao Kuo studied the art of war from youth and spoke of battles as if no one could match him. He debated his father Zhao She, who could not best him, yet never praised him.
括母问奢其故,奢曰:兵,死地也,而括易言之。使赵不将括即已;若必将之,破赵军者必括也。
His mother asked why; Zhao She said: war is a place of death, yet Kuo speaks of it lightly. If Zhao does not make him general, fine; if it does, the one who ruins Zhao's army will be Kuo.
释读:纸上谈兵。赵括书读得多,仗打得糟。长平之战,四十万赵军全军覆没,赵括的话成了空谈。
Gloss: discussing war on paper. Zhao Kuo read much and fought badly; at Changping four hundred thousand Zhao soldiers were destroyed and his words proved empty.
赵高欲为乱,恐群臣不听,乃先设验,持鹿献于二世,曰:马也。二世笑曰:丞相误邪?谓鹿为马。问左右,左右或默,或言马以阿顺赵高。
Zhao Gao wished to rebel but feared the officials would not obey, so first he tested them: he presented a deer to the Second Emperor, calling it a horse. The emperor laughed: minister, you err, calling a deer a horse. He asked the court; some stayed silent, some said horse to please Zhao Gao.
释读:指鹿为马。赵高故意把鹿说成马,看谁敢说实话。不敢说话的人都活了下来,说实话的后来都被他害死了。
Gloss: calling a deer a horse. Zhao Gao deliberately mislabeled it to see who dared speak truth; the silent lived, the truthful were later killed.
蜚鸟尽,良弓藏;狡兔死,走狗烹。
When the flying birds are gone, the good bow is put away; when the cunning hares are dead, the hunting dog is cooked.
释读:鸟尽弓藏,兔死狗烹。越王勾践灭了吴国以后,帮他打天下的大臣文种就被逼死了。功臣的下场,常常就是这样。
Gloss: bow stored when birds are gone, dog cooked when hares are dead. After destroying Wu, Goujian forced his minister Wen Zhong to death; that is so often the reward of great service.
天下熙熙,皆为利来;天下攘攘,皆为利往。
All under heaven bustle for profit; all under heaven hustle for profit.
释读:司马迁说,天下人忙忙碌碌,都是为了利益而来来去去。一句话说透了人间的热闹。
Gloss: the world's coming and going is all for gain, says Sima Qian. One line explains its bustle.
大风起兮云飞扬,威加海内兮归故乡,安得猛士兮守四方!
A great wind rises, clouds fly on; my power now covers the land, I return home; where shall I find brave men to guard the four quarters?
释读:刘邦当了皇帝以后回到老家,和乡亲们喝酒的时候唱了这首《大风歌》。打败项羽的人,心里想的还是怎么守住天下。
Gloss: Emperor Liu Bang, back home victorious, sang this Song of the Great Wind while drinking with his neighbors. Even the man who beat Xiang Yu worried how to hold the realm.

释读:桃树李树不会说话,可是人们都来摘果子,树下自然踩出了一条小路。一个人做得好,不用自己宣传,大家自然会来找他。
Gloss: the trees say nothing, yet fruit-pickers tread a path below them. A person who does well needs no advertisement; people find their own way.
读《史记》读的虽然是两千年前的事,可是一个个人物的选择、得失、遗憾,跟今天的人并没有两样。
Reading the Records is reading about two thousand years ago, yet the choices, gains, and regrets of its people are no different from ours today.
