狐假虎威（详读本）

一yī只zhī老lǎo虎hǔ在zài森林sēn lín里lǐ寻找xún zhǎo食物shí wù。找zhǎo了liǎo半天bàn tiān，它tā抓住zhuā zhù了liǎo一yī只zhī狐hú狸lí。

A tiger was hunting in the forest. After a long search it caught a fox.

狐hú狸lí心里xīn li害怕hài pà极jí了liǎo，但是dàn shì它tā没有méi yǒu叫jiào，反而fǎn ér大声dà shēng说shuō：你nǐ敢gǎn吃chī我wǒ？我wǒ是shì上shàng天tiān派pài来lái做zuò百bǎi兽shòu之zhī王wáng的de！

The fox was terrified, but instead of crying out it said boldly: you dare eat me? I was sent by Heaven to be king of all beasts!

老lǎo虎hǔ不bù相信xiāng xìn。狐hú狸lí说shuō：你nǐ要是yào shi不bù信xìn，就jìu跟gēn在zài我wǒ后面hòu mian走zǒu一yī圈juàn，看看kàn kan百bǎi兽shòu见到jiàn dào我wǒ，谁shéi敢gǎn不bù逃跑táo pǎo？

The tiger did not believe it. The fox said: if you doubt me, walk behind me and see whether any beast dares not flee at the sight of me.

老lǎo虎hǔ想xiǎng：好hào吧ba，我wǒ就jìu看看kàn kan你nǐ有yǒu多duō大dà的de本事běn shi。于是yú shì，狐hú狸lí走zǒu在zài前面qián miàn，老lǎo虎hǔ走zǒu在zài后面hòu mian，一起yī qǐ走进zǒu jìn了liǎo森林sēn lín深处shēn chù。

The tiger thought: fine, let me see what you can do. So the fox walked in front and the tiger behind, deep into the forest.

路上lù shang的de动物dòng wù看见kàn jiàn他们tā men，兔tù子zi撒sā腿tuǐ就jìu跑pǎo，鹿lù拼命pīn mìng逃跑táo pǎo，连lián野yě猪zhū也yě躲duǒ进jìn了liǎo草丛cǎo cóng里lǐ。

The animals they passed, rabbits bolted, deer fled for their lives, even wild boar hid in the grass.

老lǎo虎hǔ看到kàn dào这zhè一切yī qiè，相信xiāng xìn了liǎo狐hú狸lí的话de huà，恭gōng恭敬gōng jìng敬jìng地dì送sòng狐hú狸lí走zǒu了liǎo。

Seeing all this, the tiger believed the fox and respectfully let it go.

老lǎo虎hǔ不知bù zhī道dào，百bǎi兽shòu害怕hài pà的de其实qí shí是shì它tā自己zì jǐ，而ér不bù是shì走zǒu在zài前面qián miàn的de那nà只zhī狐hú狸lí。

What the tiger never knew: the beasts feared the tiger itself, not the fox walking in front.

走zǒu了liǎo一会儿yī huì r，狐hú狸lí又yòu问wèn老lǎo虎hǔ：现在xiàn zài你nǐ相信xiāng xìn了liǎo吧ba？老lǎo虎hǔ点diǎn点头diǎn tóu，一句话yī jù huà也yě不bù敢gǎn多duō说shuō。

After a while the fox asked the tiger: do you believe me now? The tiger nodded, not daring to say more.

老lǎo虎hǔ放fàng了liǎo狐hú狸lí以后yǐ hòu，回到huí dào山shān里lǐ想xiǎng了liǎo很hěn久jǐu。它tā总zǒng觉得jué de哪里nǎ lǐ不对bù duì，可是kě shì又yòu说不上shuō bu shàng来lái。

After letting the fox go, the tiger thought it over for a long time. Something felt wrong, though he could not say what.

动物dòng wù们men其实qí shí早就zǎo jìu看kān明白míng bai了liǎo：它们tā men怕pà的de从来不cóng lái bù是shì狐hú狸lí，是shì狐hú狸lí身shēn后hòu的de老lǎo虎hǔ。

The animals had understood all along: what they feared was never the fox, but the tiger behind it.

直到zhí dào今天jīn tiān，狐hú狸lí借jiè老lǎo虎hǔ的de威风wēi fēng这zhè个gè故事gù shi还huán在zài提醒tí xǐng大家dà jiā：要yào小心xiǎo xīn那些nà xiē借jiè着zhuó别人bié ren的de力量lì liang装zhuāng得děi很hěn厉害lì hai的de人rén。

To this day the tale warns us: beware of people who look powerful only on borrowed strength.

狐hú假jiǎ虎hǔ威wēi这zhè个gè成语chéng yǔ，说shuō的de就是jìu shì借jiè着zhuó别人bié ren的de威风wēi fēng吓唬xià hu人rén的de人rén。

The fox borrowing the tiger's might describes people who intimidate others with borrowed power.
