法不阿贵,绳不挠曲。法之所加,智者弗能辞,勇者弗敢争。
The law does not flatter the noble; the line does not bend around the crooked. Where the law applies, the wise cannot argue it away nor the brave contest it.
释读:法律不偏向权贵。墨线画出来是直的,规矩面前,再聪明再勇敢的人也得服从。
Gloss: the law favors no lord. The ink line is straight; before the rule, wit and courage alike must yield.
宰相必起于州部,猛将必发于卒伍。
A prime minister must rise from the provinces; a great general must come up through the ranks.
释读:能当宰相的人,一定要在基层干过;能当大将的人,一定当过小兵。位置越高,越需要底层的经验。
Gloss: ministers must have served locally, generals must have been soldiers. The higher the seat, the more it needs ground-level experience.
千丈之堤,以蝼蚁之穴溃;百尺之室,以突隙之烟焚。
A dike of a thousand zhang collapses from an ant hole; a house of a hundred feet burns from a spark through a crack in the chimney.
释读:千里长堤会被一个小蚂蚁洞毁掉。大灾难,常常是从最小的漏洞开始的。
Gloss: a great dike falls to a tiny ant hole. Catastrophes usually begin at the smallest crack.
长袖善舞,多钱善贾。
Long sleeves help the dancer; much capital helps the merchant.
释读:袖子长了跳舞好看,本钱多了生意好做。条件好,事情就好办,,韩非子是现实主义者。
Gloss: long sleeves make dancing graceful, big capital makes trading easy. Better conditions make better results; Han Fei the realist.
世异则事异,事异则备变。
When the age changes, its affairs change; when affairs change, preparations must change.
释读:时代变了,事情就变了;事情变了,办法就得跟着变。死守老办法的人,韩非子最看不起。
Gloss: times change, things change, methods must follow. Clinging to the old was what Han Fei despised most.
上古竞于道德,中世逐于智谋,当今争于气力。
In high antiquity they competed in virtue; in the middle ages they chased cleverness; today they contend in strength.
释读:上古拼道德,中古拼计谋,现在拼实力。韩非子看历史,一个字:变。
Gloss: antiquity competed on virtue, the middle on strategy, now on force. Han Fei read history in one word: change.
故明主之国,无书简之文,以法为教;无先王之语,以吏为师。
So in the enlightened ruler's state there are no texts of bamboo slips, the law is the teaching; no words of former kings, the officials are the teachers.
释读:韩非子的理想国:不读古书,只学法律;不拜先王,只认官员。听着激进,这就是法家。
Gloss: Han Fei's ideal state: no old books, only law; no sage kings, only officials. Radical-sounding, that is Legalism.
恃人之为吾善也,境内不什数;用人不得为非,一国可使齐。
Counting on others' kindness, you will not find ten in the realm; constraining them from wrong, the whole state can be made uniform.
释读:指望人自觉做好事,全国找不出十个;用制度让人不敢做坏事,全国都能管住。
Gloss: trust people's goodness and you will not find ten; bind them by rules and the whole state falls in line.
志之难也,不在胜人,在自胜也。故曰:自胜之谓强。
The hard thing in ambition is not overcoming others but overcoming oneself. So it is said: self-victory is true strength.
释读:最难的不是赢过别人,是赢过自己。能管住自己的人,才是真正的强者。
Gloss: the hardest victory is over oneself. Whoever masters himself is the truly strong.
右手画圆,左手画方,不能两成。
Draw a circle with the right hand and a square with the left, neither will succeed.
释读:一只手画圆,一只手画方,两样都画不好。一心不能二用,专心才能成事。
Gloss: circle in one hand, square in the other, both fail. One heart cannot serve two tasks.
以肉去蚁,蚁愈多;以鱼驱蝇,蝇愈至。
Drive ants away with meat and they multiply; chase flies with fish and they come thicker.
释读:用肉赶蚂蚁,蚂蚁越来越多;用鱼赶苍蝇,苍蝇越赶越多。办法用错了,越努力越糟糕。
Gloss: repelling ants with meat brings more; chasing flies with fish draws more. The wrong method makes effort worse.
不吹毛而求小疵,不洗垢而察难知。
Do not blow apart the fur to seek tiny flaws; do not wash off the dirt to inspect what is hard to see.
释读:吹开毛找小毛病,洗净垢看暗处,,韩非子说,挑刺谁都会,那不是本事。
Gloss: anyone can hunt flaws in the fur or stains in the dirt; Han Fei says fault-finding is no skill.
去规而妄意度,奚仲必成轮难矣。无策而决事,投石而问吉凶,圣人不能断其时也。
Discard the compass and guess at a circle, even master craftsman Xizhong could hardly make a wheel; decide matters without a plan, casting stones for omens, even a sage could not judge the moment.
明主之吏,宰相必起于州部,猛将必发于卒伍。夫有功者必赏,则爵禄厚而愈劝。
In the enlightened ruler's service, ministers rise from the provinces and generals from the ranks. When merit is always rewarded, rank and pay drive men harder still.
释读:韩非子的用人观:大官要从基层选,赏罚分明,大家才肯卖命。
Gloss: Han Fei's staffing rule, pick leaders from the ground up, reward and punish cleanly, and men will give their all.
国无常强,无常弱。奉法者强则国强,奉法者弱则国弱。
No state is forever strong or forever weak. When those who uphold the law are strong, the state is strong; when they are weak, the state is weak.
释读:国家强弱不在天命,在执法的人硬不硬。法律立得住,国家才立得住。
Gloss: a state's strength is not fate but the spine of its law-enforcers. Law stands, the state stands.
宰相之不能得,犹医之不能治内疾;猛将之不能用,犹体之不能使臂也。
Failing to gain a good minister is like a physician failing to cure an inner illness; failing to use a great general is like the body failing to move its arm.
释读:韩非子把国家比作身体:好宰相用不了,像大夫治不了内病;猛将用不上,像胳膊抬不起来。
Gloss: the state as body, an unused minister is an incurable illness, an unused general a paralyzed arm.
治民者禁奸于未萌,而用兵者服战于民心。
Those who govern the people stop crime before it sprouts; those who wage war win the people's hearts first.
释读:最好的治理是防患于未然,最好的战争是先得人心。韩非子懂:惩罚是下策,心服才是上策。
Gloss: best governance prevents crime before it forms; best warfare wins hearts first; Han Fei knew punishment is the worst tool, consent the best.
小知不可使谋事,小忠不可使主法。
Small cleverness cannot be trusted with great plans; small loyalty cannot be trusted with the law.
释读:小聪明的人不能办大事,只会听话的人不能执法。用人要看大格局,不能只看表面。
Gloss: petty cleverness cannot run affairs, blind obedience cannot enforce law, judge men by scale, not surface.
人主之患在于信人,信人则制于人。
The ruler's danger lies in trusting men; to trust them is to be ruled by them.
释读:韩非子的冷面一句话:做君主最大的隐患是轻信人。信了,就被控制了。
Gloss: Han Fei's cold warning, a ruler's greatest danger is credulity; to trust is to be ruled.
火形严,故人鲜灼;水形懦,人多溺。
Fire's form is harsh, so few get burned; water's form is soft, so many drown.
释读:火看起来凶,烧伤的人少;水看起来柔,淹死的人多。严厉的东西让人躲着走,宽松的环境反而危险。
Gloss: fire looks harsh and burns few; water looks soft and drowns many. Severity keeps people wary; softness invites disaster.
宰相之爵,前对后食;猛将之赏,虚爵而重禄。
The minister's rank earns a front seat and back table; the general's reward is empty title but rich pay.
释读:韩非子的赏罚细账:给宰相位置,给猛将实惠。赏要赏到点子上,罚要罚到骨头里。
Gloss: Han Fei's reward ledger, seat the minister, pay the general. Rewards must hit the mark, punishments the bone.
明主之所导制其臣者,二柄而已矣。二柄者,刑德也。
The enlightened ruler guides his ministers with two handles only: punishment and favor.
释读:韩非子的帝王术:管臣子就靠两样,,罚和赏。一手拿刀,一手拿糖。
Gloss: Han Fei's art of rule, two handles suffice, knife in one hand, sugar in the other.
韩非子说话从不绕弯:人性有恶,制度要严,赏罚要明。两千年后看,还是那么冷,那么准。
Han Fei never minced words: human nature has evil, rules must be strict, rewards and punishments clear. Two millennia on, still cold and still precise.
木欲寿而蠹蚀之,官欲久而蠹蚀之。
Wood that would last is eaten by borers; an office that would last is eaten by its pests.
释读:木头想长久,虫蠹就来了;官位想长久,蛀虫就来了。韩非子提醒:最大的敌人,常常长在身体里面。
Gloss: wood that would endure draws borers; an office that would endure draws parasites, the worst enemy grows from within.
释读:丢下规矩靠猜,再巧的工匠也做不成车轮;没计划靠运气,圣人也会判断失误。
Gloss: guessing without tools defeats even masters; divining without plans defeats even sages.
